The Groovy Age of Horror – Curt Purcell Interview

May 21st, 2009 by Randy Ray | | No Comments »

Curt Purcell owns and operates one of the coolest horror-related blogs on the Internet, The Groovy Age of Horror, which is devoted to (among many other things) horror books from the 1960s and 1970s. He was kind enough to answer a few questions for us.

1. Can you give our readers a rough estimate of how many paperbacks you own?

About 500 of the vintage collectible variety I’ve tended to cover on Groovy Age.  Beyond that, I’m afraid I couldn’t even hazard a rough estimate.

2. What’s the first paperback book you remember owning?

Japanese Horror Movies

Scary movies have undergone a revitalization in recent years, and much of this can be attributed to the success of Japanese horror movies, also known J-Horror movies.  Japanese horror films usually have a distinctive narrative and visual style, often with strong violence and sexuality.  Many of the best Japanese horror films also draw from the folklore and cultural mythology of their native land.

This post looks at the beginnings of Japanese horror, the era of exploitative cinema, and the modern J-Horror craze.  Important Japanese horror directors will be examined, as well as the phenomenon of the yurei…

Gothic Horror Fiction

May 3rd, 2009 by Randy Ray | | 5 Comments »

Gothic horror fiction is a literary genre that has lasted hundreds of years — examples of gothic fiction are still being released today, and are quite popular. The word “gothic” gets tossed about quite a bit. These days, you will usually hear the term “goth” applied to a certain type of young person who favors black clothing, exotic makeup, and gloomy music. The word “Gothic” implies much more than the fact that you purchase your clothes at the local Hot Topic store — it has a rich tradition and an interesting beginning.

The term “Gothic” was invented by writers of…

Italian Horror Movies

The words “Italian horror” are enough to send shivers of excitement up the spines of hardcore horror fans around the globe. Sure, these movies may sometimes contain lackluster acting and bad dubbing, but Italian horror films are also known for brutal violence and plenty of gore (with neither women nor children being spared). Often containing surreal scenes and plotlines, Italian horror movies tend to be a breath of fresh air when compared to their more formulaic cousins from the United States.

While the scariest Italian horror tends to be found in the films of the ‘70s and…

They were groundbreaking in terms of terror, gore, and (in some cases) outright corniness. These early films really pushed the envelope as far as setting up the foundation for the horror movies today. They created the clichés, the atmosphere, and the buckets of blood that were splashed around haphazardly across the screen. If you missed out on that classic decade, here is a list of 100 horror films from the 70’s.
