Douglas Clegg

Known as an author of horror and dark fantasy, Douglas Clegg has been called “the new star in horror fiction” by author Peter Straub. Horror icon Dean Koontz has taken the praise one step further, stating, “Clegg’s stories can chill the spine so effectively that the reader should keep paramedics on standby.”

Douglas Clegg is also considered a pioneer in the field of e-publishing. His novel Naomi became the first publisher-sponsored e-serial on the Internet in 1999. Business Week called it “the first major work of fiction to originate in cyberspace.” A paperback version of the book was released in 2001.

Douglas Clegg - First Stories

Born in Alexandria, Virginia on April 1st, 1958, Douglas Clegg grew up in the states of Virginia, Connecticut and Hawaii. The product of an artistic family, Clegg’s first story dealt with the death of his pet mockingbird. He was nine years old at the time.

The young Douglas Clegg was very guarded with his first stories, always hiding them from prying eyes. Whenever he thought one might be discovered, Clegg would sometimes go so far as to burn it.

During these formative years, Clegg’s first stories were influenced by such diverse works as the Bible, Edgar Allen Poe and the original Twilight Zone series. A few years later, he would discover writers such as Shirley Jackson and Shakespeare, thus expanding his interest in the art of literature.

By the age of 17, Clegg had written his first novella-length work. It was titled Asylum, although it went unpublished.

Douglas Clegg Gets Published

Douglas Clegg BooksDouglas Clegg attended college at Washington and Lee University, earning a degree in English Literature. During that time, he also worked as a DJ at the campus radio station and co-founded an international film program.

Upon graduation, he took a job teaching English in public schools, and he also worked as an editor in Washington, D.C.. He moved to Los Angeles in 1986 and worked for KCBS News, also writing articles and reviews for magazines. During this time, Douglas Clegg continued writing fiction, still dreaming of getting published.

In 1987, Douglas Clegg finished his first novel. Entitled Goat Dance, it was nominated for Outstanding First Novel by the Horror Writers Association. In 1989, it was published by Simon & Schuster/Pocket Books (which would also publish his second, third and fourth novels). His dream of getting published had finally been realized.

But Douglas Clegg was just getting started. He continues to write novels, and he has been recognized for his efforts with the Bram Stoker Award, the Shocker Award and the International Horror Guild Award. Along the way, his works have been translated into Hungarian, Spanish, German, Russian, Greek, Norwegian, Croatian and French, and several of his books have landed on the New York Times best-seller list.
